spray painting mdf

Can anyone advise me on the correct procedure to spray paint mdf using a compressor and spray gun. Previously I would have used an mdf primer paint (water based) and then a satin wood ( oil based) using conventional brushes and sponge rollers but the finish was never brilliant. I am considering using a spray gun for my next project. All the 'panels' would be individual before assembly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
