Boiler question

We have been told by a builder that the boiler in a house we're letting out is an old system - he said it has two tanks in the roof.He said the tanks can just burst one day or something like that, and that we'd have to spend a lot of money then. Is this true? He saidit'd be better if we changed it to a combi boiler now as sooner or later we'll need to change it. The boiler is the type that has pipes and stuff.

umm our boiler system has two tanks in the roof and is fine. In actual fact it is a new (4yo) one installed by the gas Board when our old one gave up the ghost. In the british climate, tanks don't "just burst" if properly lagged and if they are old and starting to fail they can be replaced. I am neither a plumber nor a builder, but if you have understood him correctly and that is what he said, I would suggest a second opinion would be sensible....

I think hes just looking for a way to make some money. I would get a few more quotes in. If you do need a new boiler then you should have as much information to hand as possible. Costs can vary a lot.

Load of rubbish if like Woofgang said it's lagged properly in case of very cold weather. If it's been there a while with no problems then I doubt anything is going to happen now. Even if you do change your boiler in the future it would be cheaper to change it to another conventional boiler, although they ALL have pipes ;-)

I don't believe that replacing the boiler with a combi would get rid of both tanks - only one. The cold water tank will still be there. Get a new builder instead!

Definite Cowboy Builder. Has he been reading too many Marlboro' questions on this site. A builder friend of ours says he doesn't reckon much to combi boilers as they can cause a lot of trouble. My friend with a combi boiler says she would never have again.

I agree with everything so far but thought I'd mention that combi boilers are far larger the a standard ones. New wall boilers can take up less space than a single cupboard, the same with the newer floor boilers. Combi boilers need a wall of their own!!! Get 2/3 other opinions, you may find there isn't a problem at all, but please got to a recognised and reputable company, some of the 'one-man-bands' might be the same as that 'John Wayne' look alike who came recently.

PS. the hot and cold tanks in my house have been there for nearly 11 years and they are fine.
