I have made a softwood gate with green oak gate posts, all timber has been planed up. the problem I have is that I treated all timbers with brown wood preservertive, as I hadn't achieved the colour I wanted I then applied a red mahogany oil based wood stain, this as you may have guessed didn't dry even after 5 days, I have now cleaned off nearly all of the wood stain with white spirit and cloths, after 50 years in the building trade as a joiner I am stumped as what to do next to achive the dark red colour I want, I hope somone can help.
Have you tried a spirit-stain? Instead of being white spirit based, this stuff is meths based. As it is quick drying, it allows you to build up the colour you want quickly. After you've achieved the colour you want, you can finish-off with wood preserving stain. BTW, you it with a cloth.
