Clicking Potterton FF80 boiler driving me mad....
During its ON cycle my boiler takes anything from 2 to 10+ minutes attempting to fire up. There is click (accompanied by a hum like a fan or motor starting) that repeats about once every second that goes on, and on, and on, and on... until there is a louder more distinct click and the flame fires up.
A gas man came, spent more than half a day, changed the air pressure switch and then the circuit board. The only change is that the clicking has significantly speeded up -used to be every 3 or 4 seconds. He says the only other possible thing is the fan, and suggested I go buy one. I've already spent over 400 quid - but he did not inspire my confidence, and the fan will cost another 100.
Gasman says while the boiler looks like a Profile 80 it is not, its an FF80. I don't have a manual for it, and could not find any information on line.
Would welcome any feedback/suggestions.
Thanks

changing the circuit board seems to be a cure-all remedy that engineers use when they don't know whats wrong with the boiler. the fact is that the boards do not fail as often as you would think, there is no test you can do on a board, you test all the other components first and if they're all ok it only leaves the board.
i would be very very annoyed if i had spent 400 on a boiler that still doesn't work, in fact my customers would not stand for that at all.
its difficult to say what the problem could be without examining the boiler in person, the only things that make a clicking sound are relays, the solenoid on the gas valve and the ignition process, the air pressure switch does click but only very faintly so you wouldn't hear it.
if your in the south birmingham or surrounding areas give me a shout.
p.s. for the future, its worth knowing that potterton who are part of the baxi group offer an inclusive repair service with all labour and parts for 240 quid.
