anyone recommend a reasonably priced flow meter to keep a measure of the heating oil consumption--thanks and cheers

I have not heard of such things for domestic use. I am also not sure that anything would be available 'reasonably priced'
You might get something like the smallest size water meter but that would not be accurate unless recalibrated for the fluid concerned

thank you scotman--i agree with you about the recalibration issue--i have seen many industrial/commercial meters but very expensive--�500+--i was thinking of more around �100/�150--i am sure there must be residential properties for rent/let where the owner can take a meter reading like would be done for gas/electricity/water so the tenant can be billed--cheers
There's one in your price range that might suit here. Have a look at their pdf download. Strangely, it says it operates on a L-ion battery that should last 8 years but is non-replaceable(!). Maybe you could contact them about that. Note also that the pipe connection is bell ended, which may require a plumber's attention, rather than DIY job
