Boiler P&T Valve

Home heating season has arrived. I have noticed that about 1 1/2 gallons of water leak from the pressure and thermostat valve of the boiler per day. Does this mean the valve needs to be replaced or could there be something else going on? Thanks for all advice.

It's hard to say, but I can throw you a few suggestions. I don't know what a thermostat valve is, but the pressure valve is a safety feature and should only expell water in the event of a fault within the system. The leaking valve suggests that there is too much pressure and it's not being reduced by the system itself i.e. an expansion vessel or overflow, depending on the system. Or it could be that it's not tight enough (depends on the valve type), or it could be faulty. But if the water is leeking from two places, I'd think that its something more serious (maybe the frost got at it?).

Thanks very much for the information, Tweed.

I'm sorry I worded the question wrong and led you astray. It is only the pressure valve that I am talking about. There is an old tag on a similar valve on my water heater that talks about yearly testing of Temperature and Pressure valves. I got confused.

Your answer got me to go back and take another look.

Further investigation reveals: The pressure gauge on the boiler reads about 14 psi. The valve is rated for 30 psi. Leaking valve must be faulty, right?

That would seem to be the case. I can't think of anything else. Good luck with it.
