Builder's Quote - is it a good deal?

Hi guys,

I've recently got a quote from a local builder for the following:
-Boarding up a hole in a partition wall
-Installing 10 spotlights
-Installing a staircase balustrade (+ supplying spindles, a handrail, etc.)
-Sanding down Artex ceiling in one room (7 m x 3 m), plastering over
-Installing 2 curtain rails
-Moving the position of two power plugs
-Replacing two light switches
-Supplying and replacing a back kitchen door
-Removal of all renovation-related rubbish

This has come to just over £3000 and I was wondering if it's a good deal. What do you think?
My area is Surrey.

Its not easy to say without seeing it but the best way of knowing is to get a couple more quotes and compare.

My builder gets prices for all the materials (which I go with him to buy) and charges a flat £100.00 per day for labour. I am happy with this 'cos I know he's not skimming off the material costs, and I know he's not an idle sod.

We know from other builders' quotes that the partition wall costs approx. £350-£400, and the spotlights are approx. £600, but the rest is all kind of unclear, as the quote is not itemised.

Do you think I have a right to ask them to give the breakdown of all costs?

Yes I would definitely ask for a full breakdown....you're the one that's going to be paying.
I'm having my garden landscaped when the weather picks up and I have an itemised quote for eveything from turf to gravel and labour costs.

Does the builder employ the electrician the joiner the artexer and the plasterer then or is he a jack of all trades? Get the quotes from the right tradesmen for gawd sake, any leccy that says he's a plasterer is not getting much work.

....but watch how quickley those cheap spotlights blow a bulb and how far apart the bannisters are, I reckon the break down should be:
joinery including materials and door furniture : £950
Plastering including preperation: £250
Electricals including sockets and wiring materials but not spots (2 days work): £400
tidy up and rubbish removal incl small skip : £200

dothawkes31 - The guy owns a building/construction company and yes he would send an electrician and a carpenter to do the work, so there will be a fair few people working on various jobs.

The duration of all projects shouldn't take longer than 3-4 days, we are told.

Zac I was using Day rates for all trades. The joinery is probably 2 days plus materials which includes a UPVC door. I didn't just pull the figures out of the air i asked a joiner

the spindles have to be a certain width apart and the bannister has to be a certain height. Why do you need to knwo that Nok are they fitting a stair lift for you?
