what to use web cam for?

I have a new sony laptop with 'motioneye' built in I have not used it yet because I don't know what I could use it for?

I am not into selling by body by dancing nude live on web cam, so what do 'normal' people use web cams for?

When I email friends and family for free, can we instead use the web cam to chat and is this free or do you pay for such services?

Skype is great. Free calls and video calls from computer to computer. Very cheap calls to landlines.
Also instant messaging if that's what you prefer. Conference calls, conference IM, and conference video.
I use it constantly to chat to friends all over the world.

My sister uses hers to speak to us when she is on skype... she's in australia.

My grandkids love the webcam for taking photos of themselves and then spending hours manipulating the images.

with an inbuilt webcam, can you take videos that you can email to friends and family?

(i know videos and photos can be shot with a plug in webcam using its software)

My daughter lives abroad and whenever I'm feeling down, I can see her beautiful face smiling at me over the webcam. Gives me a lift.
