I've just gone out to the garden and discovered my beautiful young willow tree ( about 6ft tall and only got it about 2 years ago) has been snapped almost in 2 right at the base due to the high winds! Is there any way I can save it or will it have to be consigned to the compost heap?

No expert but many trees around where I am were sawn down a few years ago and are now sprouting up again from the edges. And they were cut right through.
