I've had a fairly disastrous year.

The chickens destroyed my caulis, shallots, and onions. I went away at the weekend and my OH forgot to water my sweetcorn so it has died.

Now I have managed to exclude the chickens, what can I put in now to keep us going veg wise?

carrots can be planted now and left in till December. Lettuce can be grown, If you have some potatoes starting to sprout in your kitchen cupbords put them in, theres still chance for them to grow. There are types o colliflowers you can grow late on and leave through till winter. Also later on at end of summer you can plant garlic to give them a head start for nxt year. they will just grow root systems in the soil over winter and start to sprout shoots early jan, feb. I'v done this myself. If you have a polly tunnel you can protect them a bit from the winter weather by growing them in there.
Onions, radishes and even beets will grow if you have a growing season that extends into late September, early October. Carrots can be left in the ground even after several frosts (in fact they become sweeter).
you 'd better just put in an order to tescos and have them deliver.... seriously salad leaves, short rooted carrots, F1 varieties of calabrese, spring onions, radish, winter cabbages, and if you can germinate them you could still get baby leeks as they will stand quite happily.. and try sugar snap peas...if the first bad frost is late you might get a small crop. another trick is get a pot of living salad from the supermarkert and plant all the little seedling plants you will get a good variety of leaves for less than the price of the packet of seed.... and still time for rocket and land cress too
