use rainwater rarher than tap water seems to go a bit longer ...not much though and scald it well when you clean it
I have a small fountain cum birdbath which used to get in a terrible state very quickly with algae and bird poo. I also found that coins didn't work.
After a bit of thought I tried adding one level teaspoon of Bi-carbonate of soda to about 6 or 8 litres of water. It kept the water clear for weeks and I doubt it will hurt the birds as I use the same amount of B-o-S to a cupful of warm water for indigestion purposes.
