Can you eat shallots raw? If so, would they be nice in a cheese sandwich?

That's my second favourite way of eating them
The first is roasted.....
Pickled is good too.
Sliced thinly, they work in salads etc. My favourite is pickled in a strong spiced vinegar.
My favourite 'dirty' sandwich is cheddar cheese, shallot or spring onion, salad cream and salt and vinegar crisps. If I've been a good girl I might go for a bit of beetroot too!

Yum! Thanks everyone. Are they strong? My favourite sandwich is cheese, onion and mayo. If I substitute the onion for raw shallot, would I put in the same amount?
Shallots tend to be slightly sweeter and less acidic. Although the time of year and where they are grown makes a lot of difference.

Have a little taste is probably the best advice.
Very thinly sliced shallots on sardines on toast...delicious (but only if you like sardines.....and shallots)

Thanks. I will try all the suggestions.
Beat 4 large eggs and half a cup of milk, pour into a hot oiled frying pan, sprinkle a mixture of crumbled cheddar (about the size of a large egg) and enough chopped shallot to fill an egg cup. When the edge of the egg is beginning to set and the middle is still runny fold over the oppposite2 sides and when they stay put cut in half crossways and serve 2 people.
Yummy!
