Some of the grass on my lawn seems to have gone very 'thick', the blades of the grass are very wide rather than the normal 'thin' grass. (forgive my bad description!!).

Can anyone suggest a reason for this? Am I not cutting the grass short enough? Or is this just natural?

Thanks for your help

I can only imagine it stems from different grades of grass seed &/or the soil when it was laid.

Weed grasses are very thick grasses that often seed themselves from nearby course grass, especially if the lawn is not particularly strong.  If you can keep the lawn well fed, watered and aerated it should cut down on the problem of new course grass.

To get rid of the existing course grass, either dig out the patch and reseed, if it is a small amount, or use a knife to slash the course grass before mowing.

Mowing the lawn too closely can actually weaken the grass and cause the problem to become worse.
