Rotten Decking

We inherited some decking in our back garden which is definitely going to require replacement next Spring. Can any ABrs tell me if durability would be better if the deck planks were lain with gaps in between which would allow air to circulate underneath or does that make no difference?

I have had to repair some already and found the wood underneath to be very wet despite having a couple of dry weather days prior to repair. (We live in Scotland)

Plenty of air circulation is always a good idea. Using cheap wood will also contribute to 'deck rot'.

Always best to leave a gap in between planks to allow them swell and contract with the weather. Quality decking + regular painting with a preservative helps.

Thanks guys- my only other concern with gaps are the fact that harbouring creepy-crawlies have easy access eg. slugs, insects etc.....However, despite that you have convinced me that gaps are the way to go....

Access to where... the space under the decking... does that matter?

Well Johnnyboy - wood you have decking or not....? Is it regarded as being 'lower class'?
We inherited the decking, and up until now have found it to be quite friendly as well as functional eg. High heels on social occasions would normally aerate the lawn though fortunately these creatures can be trained and rounded up to stay on the decking!
