I Would Like Some Help Please From Fellow Gardeners About Hedges......................

Our old fence is falling down out in the garden but we cannot replace it because we cant get to the other side to work on it. There is a school field at the back of us and they have put thick bushes with thorns on. So there fore if we take the fence down there will be no room to put up another one. So my husband has said about putting a fence of bushes there instead. The bushes would have to be evergreen but only up to six foot tall. I know that is easy to do by keeping it cut down. But I would only really want it to be about a foot deep. Can anyone think of anything that would be suitable.? Not conifers at all. Many thanks

I don't understand why there would be no room to out up another fence? would it not occupy the same space as the existing one? If the school's hedge is encroaching on your land, you are entitled to cut off the overhang.

We put up the fence before the school planted all there thorny bushes so there is no room now to move the other side. My husband needs to put up new posts as the ones there now are rotting. If he did it just from one side it would make our garden smaller.

how about a beech hedge. In the autumn it would look pretty with all shades of golden colours and you could have it any height you wanted to .

How about Escallonia,average height 6-8ft. ,evergreen,pink,white,or red flowers small but lots of them (liked by bees)June to Sept. ,Not fussy about soil type. Prune if needed in Autumn. Just check variety before planting as some are slower growing than others.

We have a hedge which is only a foot deep but eight feet tall (because we haven't cut it), I can't think what it's called but it is prickly, with yellow flowers in the spring, and purple small fruits in the autumn which the blackbirds love.
