Golden Wedding

We were given a golden wedding rose last summer, it had lots of flowers till frost cut it back, its planted in a large tub with the recomended compost, I pruned it in november, this year however although looking healthy it looks like all the shoots are blind, what can I do please to make it produce fower buds?

I fear you may have pruned a little early - we do ours in February/March, when the sap begin to rise.

It was our Golden wedding last year, and we also had roses given to us. I put ours into a new flower bed, and looked at them only today, they are covered in buds already. I thinkyou may have pruned a bit early, but give it a good feed with a rose fertiliser, and keep your fingers crossed.

Your tub I think should be at least 18inches deep, personal experience has taught me that it really would be a safer bet for its longevity to plant properly in the ground.....although I'm no expert...

agree with Matheous - I had a standard rose in a pot for some years, doing OK but when I moved it into the ground, it just romped away.

Thank you, the tub is 18 incches deep and wide, so it must be the pruning at fault, do you think I should trim back the blind shoots or leave it alone?

You can prune roses in November cecil as long as you are in a mild area. Personally I would leave well alone for this year. If you are in a cold area try pruning mid to end of April in future.

Thank you, I am afraid roses don't do well in the ground here, to cold and clayish, I think I will give it a feed and leave it alone, but I will move it to a more sheltered place for the next winter.

I'd leave it for now and let it settle, and see what it comes up with - you might be surprised!
