Young Ginger Plant

Not strictly gardening but ....... I have managed to grow a piece of root ginger to about a foot high. There are alternate leaves on each side, the 9th one just appearing. So, what do I do with it now and what can I expect from it? Thanks a lot.

It will make a nce green plant for your home or greenhouse and if you crush the leaves they will smell good. Its very rare for domestic ginger to flower in the UK as IIRC there is not enough heat and light.

Bring it indoors before the frost - I had one, and the frost made it go all slimy and die :-(

Thanks to both of you. It is inside now and it is looking healthyish, the leaves are a bit on the yellow side on the edges but the stem is a nice green. In a few months I will return and update you! thanks again.

Not the easiest things to keep long term. I would imagine that in the UK, they would be very similar to the hedychiums grown in garden then brought indoors to die off for the winter.
They need good light, warmth and humidity, not easy to produce in a UK winter. Might be worth trying again in spring on a warm window sil and then growing it outside in a nice sunny spot once the risk of frost has gone.

Good luck, mine only ever reached about 12" high then just gave up.
