Growing vegetables in "contaminated" land

We are looking at buying a new house, but the solicitor's search has revealed the presence of a former landfill site 250m away. The council seem to be unable to tell us whether the land is contaminated or not. However, it is important that we would be able to grow our own vegetables in this garden. What are the implications for growing your own vegetables near to a former landfill site?

well it depends what the land was filled with and how high the water table is and if there is any flow in it. Can you get the garden soil tested for contaminants?
