I want to buy a smallish power saw, to cut through branches that are too big for my loppers, and maybe cut up some bits of wood and scrap timber. I'm a middle aged woman, so don't want anything very heavy or too powerful. Does anyone have any advice, please on whether petrol or electric is best? Any suggestions would be welcome.

Yep, agree with the above. In your circumstances electric is the way to go, but as Jordy say's be very careful when using it.
only you know the size of the branches that you are going to cut have you thought about one of these reciprocating saws, they are sold by many shops and you can just change blades depending on what you are cutting

check around for prices

and as they have stated above please take care when using power saws

Thank you to everyone for the advice. I must admit I am a bit scared at the prospect of using one but I would like to give it a try.
