just moved into a new room but in old house, landlord has just renovated it, the building is backed onto railway bridge with overgrown weeds etc, riubbish everywhere outside . when i first moved in landlord told me there was a rat problem but he laid traps, poison etc.

last night i was talking to one other guy in digs and he said he has allready seen 2-3 mice runnign around inside house.

i am terrified of mice and rats. i have tried to cover bottom of my bedroom door so anything cannot come into my room at night .

what can i do ? i will not keep food in my room but have been told rats will come in for heat during winter. also i was told to lay salt down at my bedroom door as rats or mice will not walk on salt but i gind that hard to belive, should i go buy my own poison today ? i dont want put down traps as i could not even look at a mouse dead in trap.

help....terrified !!!

Phone environmental control for advice!
I have a plug in mouse/rat repellent. It works. You can buy them at Robert Dyas or Amazon.
Sorry but you are that terrified of rats and mice and yet you moved in even though the landlord told you that there was a problem??
Give Ratter a call. I'm sure he'll be along with his number in a moment.
I have a friend who lives near to a railway station/embankment and his house was also bothered with a gazillion mice. I think they're drawn to railway lines maybe. He got a couple of those plug in things. Hey Presto... no more problem. Obviously it doesn't kill the animal but they don't like it and move on. Another suggestion is get a cat.
Sorry woofgang but with the position of today's housing problems maybe the OP had no choice!
I got someone in when this happened to me years ago in a previous house. I was watching tv one day when a mouse ran across floor!
Man came and put wire netting on possible places from outside they could have been using to get in. Also left cardboard boxes of poison. After that I only saw one and he was dead.
janbee - what is the make of the mouse / rat repellent that you have ?
I bought mouse repellers and they were useless the mice actually sat on them while they were turned on. I'd like to know of some that work.
Traps are more humane than poison. They're not expensive so if you're squeamish you could use a plastic bag to lift both trap and mouse and throw the lot in a bin.
Have you thought about using humane traps. They'll be no dead bodies to deal with.
carrust: No just live ones that will come back and finish chewing through your alarm cable at 2am.
I forgot to say that you should dispose of the mice some distance away from the house.
Are they mice or rats, the treatment is different for both if you want to do it properly.

You say a "new room" no treatment will work unless the whole of the property is treated to eliminate the problem.
...and I don't think that mice will see a doorway as the only way in!
Bazile, 3 are vermatik (came from the shopping channel last year)and one just says "pest repeller electro magnetic" and came from Amazon.
I'd be interested to read what Ratter thinks of the plug ins. I have my own views.
Any decent farm and garden suppliers has a poison that effectively drives them out of the house to look for water, the poison zapping their kidneys. Use that....not cheap but it works.
