Hi green fingered AB-ers out there ... I've just bought a lovely clematis for our back garden, but I'm not sure what sort of conditions it likes ....

Sunny position, shady position?

Would be grateful for your help, please. Many thanks , best wishes, Chox.

Different types of clematis like different positions. Have you got the name of the clematis?
Usually head in the sun and feet in the shade.
....but as Nellie says...what type is it?

Hi, it's called clematis sieboldii, it's probably a foot high, so not an immature plant. White petals with a lovely deep purple centre. Whilst asking, should I plant it in the back garden now - or wait - if the latter, when should I plant it out? The blurb which came with the plant didn't really give any growing instructions. Cheers, Chox.

Have a read, needs a sunny but sheltered position. Agree most clematis like their roots and lower bits shaded.

many thanks for the link. Very helpful. But should I plant this out now? Or perhaps just leave it in its pot, until when?

TIA, cheers, Chox.
Planting time is spring or early Autumn so now would be ideal.
Personally I'd put it out now so it can sit and settle in its spot ready for spring. Don't be concerned if the leaves go brown and fall off, they are in the main deciduous.

Many thanks for all your help and advice. The planting out will have to wait until next week - during which time we can decide the best place to plant it. I am sure it will be okay in its pot for another few days. Thanks again everyone. Enjoy the rest of Sunday.

Cheers, Chox.
