I often see pubs and suchlike with the most super duper 3ft wide hanging baskets.

How do they get then like that? I always look after my hanging baskets but they never grow like that.

They employ specialists to come and plant them up.

Ah, no wonder I can't do it then.
One of my friends, who used to work in a garden centre has the most fantastic, prolific hanging baskets.

However, they do take over her life in the summer months. They need a lot of maintenance.
Just do what you can do, Darcey.
I think they start with bigger baskets, and plants that are well matured. I suggest potting up plugs plants and growing them on before transferring to the basket. Pinch the tips and get them flourishing with side shots, then absolutely fill the basket and of course, water and deadhead everyday.
They plant them like that.

Many years ago I naively tried to create my first (and up to now only) hanging basket. Spent a lot on carefully choosing loads of seeds, and placed them where I wanted. Hung it up to get on with it. Nothing happened. Hadn't realised one needed to grow then plants first then put them in the basket.
Hanging baskets need loads of maintenance.

Thanks for your replied, I have had some success as I do look after them but nothing like those in display areas, think I'll plant them up bigger and more tightly packed next year.
My neighbour has hanging baskets, she has more flowers in it than I have in my garden and she won a prize for it
good link Chris ;)
I find that sprinkling water retaining crystals (Poundland have them) into the soil is a huge help in not allowing the earth to dry out too quickly.
I've given up on hanging baskets as no matter what I do they fail,my across the road neighbour on the other hand just sticks a load of plants in the basket, hangs them up, waters them once a day and ends up with baskets that are the envy of the street.
We have 4 wall hanging hay troughs .. they do look a bit 'super dooper'. I must admit I dont plant them up .. that is left to the resident expert, she seems to have adopted the job. There is no great secret to getting great results.
We line the trough with matting, then line that with an old compost bag, perforate it with a few holes.
Get some miracle grow compost and add some moisture retaining crystals and mix them in. Put that into the trough and plant it up with your chosen plants.
After that it is just a case of watering daily and you must feed with Miracle grow once or twice a week.
Very soon your baskets will be overflowing with colour .. just like the pubs... it hasn't stopped me going to the pub though !
Well, it's important keep comparing.
Growers start them off in March in greenhouses & sell when showy, after much pricking and pruning
