The Myth Of "The Special Relationship"

At various times throughout the US election, we've heard mention of something called "The Special Relationship". We've heard it before, of course, but just what is it? What relationship? Why special?

There was no relationship whatsoever prior to WW2. When the US and GB became allies after the US declared war on Germany, the US wanted access to all code breaking systems and methods that GB had. Churchill wasn't in favour of giving the US access to "Ultra" and Bletchley Park but he knew we needed the US for virtually everything, materials, fuel, arms, food, so he reluctantly allowed the US to have access.

That's where "The Special Relationship" began. It didn't exist beforehand and in fact, the US had put together a plan in the 1930's called Warplan Red, which was a theoretical war between the USA and Great Britain, which involved America invading Canada and British Carribean territories.

Where is this "Special Relationship" now? What do we get from it? Especially in the wake of Brexit?  Ask any American about it and they don't know what you're talking about. And before you ask, yes, I have spoken to some Americans about it. They'd never heard of it. You Brits! You don't half think you're important, don't you?! 😄

....and breath, why do you stay here if you hate your country so much?

Donald Trump has had many special relationships

Am I Right ?

I'm Not Wrong !

Question Author

TTT, are you on the wrong thread? The last part of my OP is Americans talking, not me. I know. I know. I posted it, but it's the Yanks that said it.

Are most Americans basically British decedants anyhow?

Question Author

Possibly but I think there's lots from other countries too. Don't know if British decendants are in the majority though.

//Ask any American about it and they don't know what you're talking about.//

Not true.

//yes, I have spoken to some Americans about it.//

Ah, you spoke to 300 odd million of them did you or just a couple of rednecks you bumped into in a bar?

the USA was also involved in WW1

The "Special realationship" really is only about intelligence and military.  Yes we are small fry and I'm sure the USA could manage without us but they do train their forces with ours jst as we do with theirs.

Question Author

US involvement in WW1 was started by their war with Mexico. Maximillian was German and Mexico was allied to Germany because of that, so the US declared war on Germany. It had nothing to do with supporting European countries.

They still supported, and freed, European countries.

09:03 ....and you are revelling in it.

Question Author

Nah. Not at all. I'm a true patriot! This Sunday, I will be marching past The Cenotaph in Whitehall, along with thousands of others, to remember our brave servicemen who gave their lives for this country. I will will be in Column A. Our number is A41, actually. I'd give you a wave but it's not allowed. We will remember them.

What did the Pilgrim Fathers ever do for the yanks?

Question Author

They pitched up at Roanoke, then vanished!

09:17 they would be ashamed of you, you post anti British rubbish like this all the time.

Question Author

😄 😄 😄 for TTT! ^^^^^^

It's very odd isnt it TTT?

lefties all hate their own country I think it's in the DNA.

Question Author

But you shouldn't post that, TTT if you can't support it with proof of any of my "anti British" postings. Find them please, then post the links.

where's your remembrance avatar then 10cs?
