For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The idea of a wormery is not to produce worms, you put certain types of kitchen/garden waste in it, along with a colony of worms to live in it. After a while the worms eat the wste and pass it through their bodies, what comes out the other end is lovely rich (and totally inoffensive), compost to use on the garden. If you hook out the worms to use as bait then that will be the end of that!
I dont have one, but I know a man that does.
Its a bit different from the standard compost bin as it is not in contact with the ground and I cant see any way that rats can get in, unless they are very determined ones the nibble through the plastic.
He puts vegetable peelings in the top, which is then broken down by the red worms ( which can be bought ) exess liquid can be drained off via a tap at the bottom which he uses to feed his bonsai trees and runner beans.
Another guy I know breeds the worms in the same way, solely for use as fishing bait.
