we laid turf nearly a fortnight ago and have been watering it every day, it is looking good and growing, but we don't know when to mow it, some people have said the longer it grows the longer the roots are while others have told us that we should start mowing it asap to train it to grow short.

Does anyone how long it should be left before mowing?

I would'nt be in too much of a hurry to mow your new turf.
Firstly, make sure it has knitted together properly and it has rooted well into the top soil, you can get a good idea of this by lifting a corner to see how well developed it is.
When you do start mowing, put the blades on a high setting at first and lower them gradually over the cutting season. Good Luck Tbird+
In addition to Tbirds's advice, most people advise the first cut after 20mm of new growth and then only remove the new growth.
