I found squirrels seem to like tulips and crocus bulbs but they dont seem so keen on daffodils, so I tend to go for the daffs these days. the short varieties are best for containers like 'te ta tete' (hope thats spelled right)
You could also try covering the containers with wire or plastic mesh and take it off once your bulbs start to peep through.
There are a few products on the market that the makers claim to work in the form of gels and pellets but some folk's swear by chile powder or pepper dust.
