Crushing it then using glyphosphate [tumbleweed is one brand] may get it under control [beware of pets & chldren] see this link http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.co.uk/horsetail

Thanks paulz. It looks as if this weed is a bad one, its growing through the gaps between my paved front garden and spread into my walled border. I don't really want to lift my paving stones. I'll try breaking the skin of the weed before I apply weedkiller next time, and also keep getting rid of it as soon as it grows in the hope that the lack of light will kill its deep roots.
The packet states "Children and pets need not be excluded from the treated area once dry". See also vhttp://www.scottsukonline.com/products/weedcontrol
