Felling a tree

What is the approximate cost of a tree surgeon to chop down a 25' tree with approx 3' girth at the base. Rather than remove the roots just 2' of stem to remain. What is the extra charge for cutting into logs and taking away?

Always difficult to assess costs without knowing location, type of tree, spread etc. If you haven't had a recommendation, have a look in the yellow pages for 3 local, experienced tree surgeons who are fully insured with �5m public liability and get quotes - all will include 'taking away'. Dont touch anyone advertising with just a mobile number. Would have thought �200-250 would not be far out - unless you're tree is in the rear garden of a Central London terrace that is!

With 90mph winds forecast for this week-end maybe nature will do the job for us as the tree is very exposed.

If you lived near me in Herefordshire, my husband would come and do it for noghing as we could do with the wood for our woodburner!!

Outrageous that these folks charge to take the logs away when they can sell them for �60 a trailer load.

Ahhh Silvercat, if only the world was so simple - I cut your tree down, you let me keep the logs, give me two pots of honey, a lovely big marrow, a steaming mug of home made soup and we're all square! Unfortunately the professional treefella will need to build into his price the cost of chainsaws, industrial chipper (anything from �7-15K), truck, public/employee liability insurance and wages for staff, who horror upon horrors would want paid holidays as well! Having seen these guys reduce many a 70ft Poplar, let me assure you, they are worth every penny.
