Does anyone know of an electric gadget that stops algae in a garden pond please. We've seen one but can't remember what it was called. TIA

I have heard that if you put some straw in the pond that this keeps algae at bay

We've tried the small hay bales you can buy for this purpose but they didn't work. Thanks anyway.
Hi again, found the machine that may help you.Check on this website for Pond Vac.
www.easylifegroup.com.
By the way it is straw you use and not hay.
cheers
The "device" that you're probably thinking of is a "magnet"....an inline magnet which is supposed to ruin the structure of algea.

They don't work

Instead, get a decent UV....10 watts of UV per 1,000 gallons of pond .
If you are getting a problem with blanket weed.....i (and many other koi keepers) use cloverleaf blaketweed cure....it is superb stuff although it costs 15 ish.

Failing that, getting the balance right between water, fish, aquatic plants and marginal plants is a good start
the straw answer is good but has to be barley .I am lucky and get from my neighbouring farmer for nothing. You need to put it in some sacks like the onions used to come in and sink them in the pool with some nylon string attached so you can pull them out at the end of the year for re-use next year. These need t o go in early in the year (mine have been in a couple months) as it doesn't work until the straw starts to rot.It isn't totally erradicating but I have done it for several years and it does keep mine reasonably clear.
