I've recently acquired an ornamental tree for my garden. It has been suggested that I polish the trunk to enhance its appearance but what do I polish it with. Do I use a dry cloth or some sort of polish like bees wax ?.

Is it a real, living tree? I have never heard of a real tree being polished before. What type of tree is it?
I know that I live in the middle of nowhere but I'm certain it is not the 1st April yet - shurely??
mmm, well unless you're going to take it to Chelsea polishing your tree sounds a bit extreme - I don't polish inside the house anymore! :o)
Maybe it's a prunus serrula which has lovely shiny bark ....like this?

If it became green or dirty over the winter you could wash it with warm water & a soft brush but as the old bark peels to reveal a new glossy layer underneath it's really unnecessary work. I'd never put polish on a tree, let nature do it's own thing.

Please don't put anything on the trunk of your tree. It's a living thing and any unnatural substance on it will probably damage it. It could also damage the various insects and bees could be using the trunk and the bark as their natural habitat.
