Lilac flowers

Last couple of years my smallish lilac, about 6' tall but fairly narrow, has been covered in flowers but this year it has very few, has anyone any tips for me to be able to improve this for next year please?

I was told and always stick to it that you must cut all the flowers off as soon as they die..As I think the lilacs grow on new wood....anyway it works for me...cut mine all off yesterday in fact..
