When is the best time to grow sunflowers ?

One is tempted to reply "when the sun is shining", but that's just so wrong for a Monday morning, no? Actually, here in the western U.S., sunflowers are grown as a major crop by farmers for the valuable oil they produce or, in some cases, as confectionary seeds... you know the kind; the ones the kids leave the hulls of scattered where they congregate. But, I digress... those farmers use a rule of thumb for planting, that being when the soil reaches a sustained temperature of 50 degrees F. This assures germination even if the nights turn cold for a short while.

Be sure they are in a position to get maximum sunlight throughout the day... at least 6 to 8 hours and keep in mind the larger, taller varities will shade other plants, which is not a good thing....
