Hello clever AB gardeners. Sowed some grass seed last autumn but it has come up patchy (probably my fault for trying to stretch it too far!) Can I top it up with new seed or just start again? If ok to top up, should I rake topsoil on top or what? TIA.

What I do is to carefully scatch the surface loose, sprinkle in some new seed, then rub some fine soil over the top, and keep moist for a week or so.

Thanks - I had that idea vaguely but wasn't sure. Do you just use some spare soil from garden, or would you buy some topsoil from garden centre?
I`d leave it until the ground has warmed up a bit longer, or else you will be feeding the birds. 2-3 weeks time.

Thanks. Shall do.
Fine soil from garden.
If you have a problem with birds, peg some chicken wire panels across it with canes, about 3-4 inches up.
I but some seed down late last year but covered it with fleece and pinned it down with some old three inch nails as we have lots of cats about and the result was great the fleece was about 6 quid ,
