i have some straws in haniging baskets. Most of them are fruiting really well. The Q is: those that are fruiting well have their leaves dying...(but fruit is healthy). Whislt the plants that have no fruit at all have the most luscious green leaves. Why?

Thanks in advance folks....

oops... thats "STRAWBS" in hanging baskets not "straws"...weird picture huh?
Probably a) Drought and drying out, and b) Fertilizer makes leaves great at expense of fruit.
Question Author
oh AIbags thanks for that. However, the plants have all had the same amount of fertilizer and they are all well watered so can't be drought. Its odd.
Hi evedawn, hows the course going?
There are many varieties of Strawberries and you have possibly 2 diff ones in your hanging Baskets. There should be Fruit appearing at a later date, any blossom/flowers appearing on them ?
The plant with the fruit - the fruit also shares the nutrients in the soil whereas the plant with only green leaves does not have to share the nutrients. So it's well nourished and healthy. Hope this makes sense.

yes there are a few different types redman. society I also wondered if the leaves were dying cos of the nutrients being used for the fruit / blossoms. AND...boxtops...thanks for asking...the course is tough going...i've just allowed myself the luxury of a short break to be on AB...my head is a jumble of trying to remeber things. I have an exam next week (not the AMSPAR this is for a PC course) and....an AMSPAR exam the week after....ooooeeeerrr
Good luck anyway - I'm sure you will be fine - let us know!

thanks box...X
I bought six different varieties in a pack from Aldi's and planted them in a deep old drawer in the greenhouse in good multi-compost and have hade two plants produce a couple of strawbs which were lovely, but the rest have 8" high leaves and one or two flowers only. I am planting their runners into 3" pots alongside and pinned down and hope to get a good crop later in the season. I have not fed them in the hope that will force them to produce fruit if they think they are dying and will want to set seed. Only H2o.
