I have stupidly allowed two very long suckers to grow on my favourite rose. The remaining stems look a bit sick, but does that mean that is it for this year? Only discovered it when I used my new glasses.
Are these suckers from below ground? If so, they may be reverting from the original root-stock and may not be the same variety as the rose you have, which is usually grafted on to another root-stock. If that's the case then I believe you should chop 'em off below ground. See here for some hints http://www.gardenseek...oses/rose_suckers.htm
It probably won't be any good this year, but personally I would cut the rose really hard back at the beginning of next year, almost to ground level. It seems drastic but I did it with all my old roses and they have been fabulous this summer. Glad you've got some new glasses!! You made me chuckle.
Generally speaking, if a hybrid rose begins sending suckers out from below the graft knob you may as well pull it up and start over with a new one. New suckers will start growing the following year and will never (almost never) produce any blooms. All the plants energy goes to growing the suckers...
