How long does grass have to be before you can't use a lawnmower on it?

I have an overgrown patch I want to mow but the grass it pretty long. I have a flymo to use but not sure whether I can use that or have to cut the grass down a bit first.

Thank you :)

I think if it's over about 2 inches, you should strim it first (but it's no good asking me really, I haven't had a lawn for ages).

I loved the thought of a garden but a house and garden just for me is turning out to me a bit optimistic with my arthritis. Cleaning up after dirty cat feet and their messy eating keeps me busy enough, just not good at trying to bend or kneel down for very long but needs must!

I think I will need to strim it first.
