Or is it a case of how long is a piece of string? I am a self employed childminder and sent in my first short tax return a few weeks back. Just wondering when I will get the dreaded bill through.

Normally payment is sent with the Tax Return. Most SE Returns are completed for Nov (on paper) or Jan (internet).
No, it must be completed by 31 October if submitted on paper (suggesting 'November' just won't do and will incur a penalty).
The bill must be paid by 31 January in all situations.
The HMRC calculation based on your submission will turn up in good time - probably about 8 weeks time.

I got the bill today, oh no! Luckily I've just got enough to pay it as I had dipped into the money I had put aside naughty naughty.
Just another question, I stupidly forgot to calulate last years loss I made into the figures I presume it is too late to do anything now but can I carry that loss forward next year?
You can usually offset losses from previous years - best talk to an accountant.
Well done Tambo...again..!! No, payments are not sent with SE returns.

Yes you can offset losses. If you don't have an accountant phone the tax office and make an appointment. They will take you through it step by step. They are extremely helpful.
