This may be a silly question but here goes.

have just cut down adn dug up a 6ft conifer tree but do not know where I can take it.
can I take to the tip?
Do they have the facility to shred or whatever?

yes, take it to the tip where they will have a garden waste skip
You can take it to the dumpit - my husband has taken some recently. Like Hawkwalk says they have a garden waste skip at most dumpits.

Just to confirm the previous answers. However, if you can't get it to the tip (i.e. lack of transport) phone your district council offices environmental services and ask their advice.

If you can (providing the conifer is still with you) have a look at BBCi `Gardeners World` this weeks episode and you will see how to make a feature with old tree trunks.
if you live in the rhondda valley all you need do is cut it up and put it in the recycling bags which they provide on a regular basis. I
