I’ve got several thick cement type pots on my patio which were planted out last
year with dwarf daffodils and narcissus and which gave a nice show. But, I was quite
surprised to note that green shoots are coming through already. I’m sure they
won’t survive. I live in the South East and we have lately had some frosty mornings,
but snow is expected this weekend. Should I put them in the shed with light watering
now and again or the garden room (as we call it) attached to side of house with a clear
roof? Or are they just too early anyway and will die?
best idea is to wrap the whole pot in bubble wrap. Don't worry about watering. If there is any space at the top of the pot, you could cover the shoots up again with dryish soil as well as the bubble wrap.
Putting some dryish soil on the shoots and no watering does sound a good idea as this may slow their growth down but unless I take them inside, I don't really think they'll survive any frost or bitter weather. I may put them in the shed. But having said that, delicate plants do survive under snow. I'll give the bubblewrap a try too. Thanks for that woofgang.
So Hawkwalk, you're saying leave nature to take it's course. I'm just so surprised that they're shooting right now. So ........ I'll definitely leave them outside for the winter perhaps in a warmer sheltered position against the wall of the house. Thank you all.
Its not the shoots that get damaged by extreme cold. In a pot, the whole pot can freeze, freezing the bulbs which kills the daffs....hence wrap the pot
I also live in the South East (Central London) and my spring bulbs have been shooting up for about a month - Hyacinths are also getting the flowers coming through - Its like this every year and I just leave them to get on with it - no special treatment or covering up...and they have never died on me yet...p.s. the snow hasn't affected them either.
