Decor for a room that is quite dark.

I am going to "muck out" my spare bedroom (junk room) and get it redecorated. It has not been done since we moved in and is has magnolia walls and faded carpet of an indeterminate colour. It faces north so is not very light.What colour walls and carpet etc would make it brighter.Any ideas welcomed,I dont have much of an eye for interiors. Thanks.

Not going to comment on colour but choose a silk rather than a matte finish paint and put in a mirror or more than one to reflect the light.

You need something that reflects light. What about some whitish wallpaper with a slight sheen to it? along with a large mirror on the wall that faces the window.

Sorry to disagree with the ladies above, but silk paint and shiny wallpaper is awful :o) - no offence!!

I'd go for a warm bright colour like a soft teal or duck egg colour. You can get special light reflecting paint if need be. If you go to the Dulux mixing area, they divide the paint samples into fresh/warm etc - just go for a warm shade of a colour you like and get it mixed in the lightest shade on the chart and you cant go wrong.

If you are looking for inspiriation, it's easy with a bedroom, just find some bedding you like, pick a colour from that and choose a paint to match or contrast from a warm toned pallet and bob's your uncle!!

A white ceiling and white woodwork make all the difference. As suggested go for a nice warm pale colour which you like on the walls (peach, lemon, pink) and floor then pop it up with a few bright objects (lamps etc)
However, what often works is a very pale grey on the walls which make the room look bigger then warm shades throughout the room.
