Gas Boiler Noise

My condensing boiler is situated in the loft which is very cold. When it is very icy, the boiler makes an unholy noise as though its trying to fire up but can't. I have spoken to British Gas with whom I have a sevice contract, but I am not getting any help, only more worried that 'when its very cold this drain pipe here, can freeze up and then the bolier won't start. We can sell you a little device that keeps this pipe warm via an electric current'. Thanks a lot, give me the heebeegeebees and then charge me for it too. Any ideas guys?

One of the most common places to install new boilers today is actually outside the house. They're inside a well insulated cabinet of course.
I would just try wrapping your condensate pipe in lagging first.

There are electric devices that keep it warm. I've seen several people on here who have them, but if you can get at it and lag it well, that should take care of it.

Agree with TB. BG is just BOUND to try and sell you the expensive solution when a cheaper solution is just as good. I had a similar problem with a village hall boiler. Used an insulated wrap with a silver reflective surface on the outside. It was sticky on one side and it came from HomeBase for quick convenience (in the interests of balance: other, equally-expensive DIY outlet channels are also available). Can't remember the brand, but about a tenner.
