I don't want to get it so clean that I might be tempted to eat my dinner of it, but just a bit cleaner than it is. Have used bleach without the desired effect. Would Brillo pads do the trick?

Connemarra, //another tip is put the bleach and other cleaning products into your cistern.//

are you trying to kill off poor old Sandy

Bleach and other cleaning products!! you do realise that mixing bleach with other cleaners will usually produce a rather dangerous and toxic gas, akin to mustard gas I believe.

Never ever mix bleach with anything! it is also worth remembering that bleach has no cleaning agent in it, it just kills germs and turns dirt etc.white.
Snap conne, have always done it that way, but took time to find the easiest and best method to clean the toilet bowl.
Would never use a brillo, but the green scalers are the best and they never scratch.
Good luck sandy, get scrubbing!
I have never put anything in my cistern, and only use a little of bleach to keep germs at bay, but never to clean the bowl.
Half a cup of scale remover is sufficient left overnight.
I would never have dreamed that cleaning the loo could provoke such a long discussion!!!!!!!!! xx
Sandy, just to add my tuppence worth, I too would recommend Harpic 100% Limescale Remover... However, make sure you get the one marked "Original" as I find the "Fresh" version not to be as effective. As someone also suggested, pour it in your loo last thing at night and leave overnight. Next morning, a flush and perhaps a quick going over with the toilet brush and voila! your loo should be as clean as a whistle.
We've got really hard water here and we get a lot of limescale in the sink, bath and loo. I have found that a surefire way to move it - although it involves manual labour - is to get one of those blocks for removing hard skin off your feet (the white or black blocks, I hasten to add, not a pumice stone) and just scrub away at the marks. It does work. In between, I use the Harpic fizzy tablets.
Empty the water out before adding limescale remover.
We have lovely acid here called salfumante, it is hydrocloric acid, cleans the limescale and everything, brill but hurts like mad on the hands and the fumes are killers. Why not try Cillit Bang (I'm Barry Scott!!!) it works relaly well on limescale and it is limescale that dirties the loo.
Black harpic is very effective.
I swear by ajax, its a very slightly abrasive powder which you leave on for a while and then scrub as hard as you can with the loo brush. It great.
Lol Sandy - Take the bulb out and you'll save on electric too.
Not that I'm OCD but did a trial on a toilet when looking after a friends house. I found Morrisons limescale remover to be the best.
Dont use a brillo pad you will end up with grey scratch marks down it, they will not go, harpic do a loo bomb, if it is lime scale remover use that, I use harpic 100% lime scaler and bleach in between, you can also get the non scratch saucepan cleaners, that look like a white netted ball to go round the loo rim,
I also ram the water out of the toilet by pushing the bog brush down it to reduce the water, before administering lime scale product, as it is less diluted, and works far better,
