I recently bought a steam mop from Aldi, to use on my carpets. I have noticed that Amazon and Ebay sell detergents suitable for adding to the water in steam mops. Could I use an ordinary dilutable carpet cleaner like Bissell? Or does it have to especially made to use in the steam mops? I find that steam alone does not remove the dirty marks on my cream lounge carpet.

You could certainly try it but you may find that it doesn't work as well as one specificaly made for steam mops.
might find it voids your guarantee. i use one of those cleaners that you spray on the floor and mop off with my steam mop to take care of thr filthy bits
Steam mops are good for lifting the pile, refreshing and deodorising carpets but I think a shampooer would be better for actual cleaning. If it's just a few marks you could try a spot cleaner before you steam. I mainly use mine on hard floors and do add a dash of Zoflora, which adds a nice scent.
I spray extra dirty bits directly before steaming...wouldn't put anything in it ...
Don't understand the thinking of detergents for a steam mop. Surely one of the mop's selling powers is that it hygienically cleans surfaces without added chemicals?
except Boo, that there are certain things that it won't clean, like a mixture of dog dribble and biscuit....
and manure brought in on bottom of wellie boot !
