After flushing the toilet the cistern fills up but instead of the water stopping when its full it continues to flow and overflows into the toilet. Is there a way my husband can fix this or do we need a plumber,Thank you in advance

Sorry the link is not coming up properly if you just type your title heading into google ideas will come up. I had to do this myself recently and fixed it without a plumber
If it's a low Level Sytem, take the lid off & you will see the ball on the left, follow the arm to the right where the flow of water come in, there is an adjusting screw there made of plastic, use a pliers to undo the lock nut then adjust, 5mins of a job Ellie.
Putting a slight downward bend in the rod connecting the float to the valve should solve it, ellie.
Dear oh dear ... lots of advice and at this pint nobody knows what kind of cistern or valves you have . ... A picture could save thousands of words !

Difficult to say without knowing whether your cistern is using the old-fashioned ballcock or is a newer design. However - firstly in both instances it's simple to alter the inflow, and secondly if you can't follow any of the tutoring links given then rest assured it is a tiny little job for a handy person.
Manually gently raise the float. If water continues to flow, replace the inlet valve assembly. If flow stops then adjust the float or level sensor to activate valve closure sooner.
The old "ball" system does not overflow back into the pan.

Have a look at this, ellie44.

thank you all so much for your helpful replies and yes I should have been more specific regarding the model no. and age . My husband found the instructions and it is the univalve that has the problem. Unfortunately he doesn't feel confident enough to understand how to repair it. Well at least we are keeping our plumber in work. Once again thanks for trying to help
