I usually get my curtains made to measure via a website. I've used them quite a few times and the curtains are always lovely. I would like to buy some ready made (as it would be cheaper!) but have no idea how to measure! When I buy them online they just want the length of my curtain track and how long I want the curtains. Any help would be appreciated. TIA

When you buy ready made, you buy a pair of curtains. If you purchase a pair of ready made curtains 72" width you will get two curtains each of 72" in width which will then take the gathering into account. So: measure your pole and this is the width your pair of curtains need to be each.

just measure the curtains that are already up. the drop is how long you want them and the width is usually twice the length of your curtain pole.
Sound advice from Retrochic there.

An alternative approach though is simply to measure one of your existing curtains!

Which is what Retrochic said and I totally agree, especially if you are happy with the sizing of the current curtains.
however, if the sites are asking for the length of the curtain track they are probably already taking the doubling/gathering into account. If you falsely put in your curtain track is double the length it actually is, you run the risk of the curtains being twice as wide as you need
I should learn to read more accurately, Mamyalynne ;-)

Thanks Retrochick, that was what was confusing me! I didn't know if the width size was for a pair of curtains or just one :)
