Embroidery/ Tapestry

I have bought a large canvas and wools kit in a charity shop. Unfortunately the instructions are missing. It is one of those where horizontal wool stitches are already worked over the patterned area of the material. Sorry I can't explain that any better. I've never worked on one like this before. What stitch is it best to use to complete the picture. I've only ever worked ones with a print background. I can work both half cross stitch and tent stitch. Thankyou.

Its a trammed or tramee canvas. You can use tent stitch or a half cross stitch
