Cat Versus Carpeting

At the moment our cat keeps scratching the lounge carpet..we are getting new carpet..can anyone suggest what to get to stop this?  Berber, short pile etc.

Or tie it's paws behind it's back ?

I am in my seventies.  I adore cats, and I have looked after multiple cats all my life. 

There is no answer to the problem of cats and carpets. Cats cannot resist scratching and pulling the carpet, whether it is long pile or short pile. 

The only answer is hard floors.

Has it got a scratching post? My cat (female) always uses the post but my late tom cat loved the carpet.

I think a loop stitch (berber?) will catch its claws, probably better with tufted.
