Steamer versus iron

I need to replace my iron but have seen steamers advertised. They look great but are they as effective as irons? Are there any flaws that I need to know about eg I can't see how they could do collars and cuffs so well.

I dont know exactly which steamer you are talking about, but I used to work in a charity shop where they steam the clothes before putting up for sale and I think they are fantastic. I would love one as they simply iron out every crease. They take a bit of getting used to but you hang lets say, a shirt on a hanger and steam it with a thing a bit like the end of hoover. Much quicker than ironing and no long sharp creases. The ones they used cost almost �300, but I have see a similar one on QVC for about �60. By the way I have also seen the assistants in "East" using one and that is a really nice dress shop. Good luck

Steamers might be great for removing creases, but what if you want to put a crease back in, as with a pair of trousers, or shirt sleeves? Or press a baggy looking hem, or a washed woolly jumper to make it look new again? Only an iron will do this, a steamer won't. Get a steam iron, I'd say.

I have decided to buy a steamer but will hold on to my old iron for those jobs that you mention heathfield.
Fingers crossed it will remove some of the nuisance of ironing.
