Water Meters

Has any-one out there found that having a water meter is not the money-saving device it's cracked up to be?

I found the opposite to be true. The Water Board told us we would pay �580 per year on the house we are living in, if the charge was based on its rateable value (it is a very big house).

We pay approx �120 per year for metered water.

I agree with mrs.chappie. My mum was advised to have one fitted as it would save her money being a single person and thus low water user, compared to the water rateable value of the 3 bedroom bungalow she has. It does! and similar to the amount mrs.chappie mentions.

I guess the differentiator is whether you would use more water than the fixed water rateable value. Often single users or couples in relatively large houses will be better off as the water rateable value of the property is high compared to their actual usage.

They aren't money-saving if you have high water usage (so cut down!), not that those in new houses have a choice seeing as they have been compulsory on most new build properties for some years now.

I pay less now on a meter than I did 15 years ago on rateable value, approx �140 a year

I am not on a meter and only pay approx �80 per year.

Always had a meterbut South West Water are the biggest sharks around when it comes to water charges. We are two OPS and live in a bungalow in Devon and pay �120 aroung �120 every quarter. We really do try to save on water consumption but it does not seem to produce a realistic bill.
South West Water havethe highest charges in the country. Why like Gas and Electricity cannot we buy water from any provider?

I am with SW Water also....I pay �27 per month,living in a 3-bed maisonette.Compared to mrpeter @ �80 per year, I feel as if I am being ripped off big-time
