dyson dco7 problem, help appreciated from u lovely peeps!! :0)

Hi all, i'm on my second dyson (both secondhand so I can't complain much except the dc07 cost much more than my first and went wrong rather quickly!). Anyway, as with the first dyson I owned, it cuts out after about ten minutes or so and i've also lost most of the suction in the hose. I contacted dyson (being cheeky lol) and they said it was probably the filters etc. Does anyone know if I can fix this myself? Where are the filters? I have bought a new hoover in the sales (a dirt devil, half price, but it's absolutely rubbish as it picks up great but i'm having to empty it even before i've started on the stairs!! .....my house isn't dirty, i'm just thorough and my dyson never had a problem before with the usage!! :0) ) Any help would be greatly appreciated as the dirt devil is going back for a refund 'toot sweet' and, when it's working, I love my dyson more anyway! lol (not in a 'funny' way though lololol) Please reply, you knowledgeable people you! lol ;0)

I much prefer my Vax to the Dyson. reason being, it was cheaper, works brilliantly - and came with a 10 year guarantee! best i've ever had.

andrea...lay the Dyson down and look underneath to where the hose goes in and you will see a rubber flap. Remove wand handle from machine and look down hose to to see if you can see right through it. If not push a long piece of wire through to clear it. The filters are easily accessible to clean by taking of the transparent box off. Some filters are washable. Any Domestic supply Shop will help you with purchasing the correct type. OK?

I think there is a washable set of filters just below the cones as carlton23 suggests. Not sure how you get to them on this model but washing the filter and screen holder thoroughly and drying them properly made a fantastic difference to suction.

stretch the hose out all the way and seeif there are any splits in it mine usually go at the base tape it up put the filters in the washing machine my son used to work on the bins you wont beleive how lazy people are they throw out dysons and other cleaners because they cant be bothered to clean them out he used to bring them home get them out side and give them a good fie out ,we have got 1 upstairs 1 down and a little cylindar one for the cars he has got 2 at his one only had a sock jammed in the pipe it was thrown out with the box and instruction booklet so dont be frightened to give it a good pulling about i also spray a good squirt of polish in my dust box when i empty as it make the muck drop out easier next time

Hi peeps, Thankyou soooo much for all your replies! I'm getting excited that I might get my dyson back! lol It's stored in the garage at the moment so I can't look at it properly at the mo but just a couple of questions for you lovely peeps before I do......
Carlton, where is the 'transparent box' located? I know where it is on my kids pretend dyson but I don't recall seeing it on the real one, is it at the base of the hose?

Alan, what are the 'cones' and where are they located? Also, what is a screen holder?

Ruthann, will try the polish tip (if I can get it working properly again lol)....thanks!

Has anyone experienced the cutting out thing and found it to be because of dirty filters? something else?

andrea,.......What model Dyson do you have? I believe ALL Dysons have transparent dust boxes on them. They are what you can see all the dirt through. I expect it `cuts out` because it overheats due to being blocked with dirt somewhere. To release the dirt box on mine I have to press down the lever just below the box and lift it up and outwards and pull it apart where the whole thing swivels, and reverse the process when it is emptied. The centre inside cone will lift out for washing in luke warm water and washing up liquid. Anything else we can help you with?

Ours used to occasionally cut out. It turned out ot be a simple problem- there was a piece of stringy or something wrapped around the brush n the bottom, so it was having to work 3 times as hard to turn, making it overheat, and then cut out.

Turned the dyson over, dug out all the long hair and the piece of string from around the brush- needed scissors to cut some of it away, and voila, it hasnt cut out since.
we make sure we clean the brush regulalry now!

Carlton....you are a superstar!!!! (this site needs to employ you!) :0) I have a DCO7 but didn't think that the transparent box was the cylinder that the dirt goes into as it isn't a box....my fault entirely, as my kids one has a transparent box at the bottom of the hose, so, stupidly, thought mine had the same as I just hoover with my cleaner and don't really look at it.

Things I would still like to know, just to be a total pain in the posterior is:
What and where is the 'screen holder' located?

Is the filter on the cone readily seen and are there anymore elsewhere?
How many washable filters are there (and locations if you know)?
These questions are for anyone else aswell as i'm sure Carlton is pretty fed up with me already (but they've been a total diamond anyway by replying back twice already, with great advice!.... This peep is why the answerbank is THE place to come too for advice!!)

See, told you I was a total pain in the proverbial....sowwy! lol
I just don't want to get my dyson out and only do half the job and it still doesn't work so I have to come back to this thread to ask again for more advice, which will totally annoy some peeps, so I'm trying to dot all my I's and cross all my T's :0)

The filter is situated above the dirt box. Remove the box, tip the bit that goes on top back, and inside you should see a circular thingy. The filter is the foam bit, and all I do every now and then is wash it out, dry it, and replace.

That said, I do wonder if that is causing the problem.
